Hitch or Tongue Weight is the total weight that the trailer’s tongue places at the coupling point or hitch of the tow vehicle. For safe towing, the recommended amount of tongue weight is 10% – 15% of your loaded trailer’s weight.
The tow vehicle Cargo Weight is the total combined weight of all cargo (electronics, car seats, aftermarket speakers, gas cans, supplies, equipment, etc.) inside the cab or in the bed of the tow vehicle. This may need to include fuel depending on the manufacturer’s specifications.
The trailer Cargo Weight is the total combined weight of all trailer cargo (equipment, vehicles, winches, strapping, supplies, etc.) on the trailer.
The Passenger Weight is the total combined weight of all passengers (People and or Pets) you are traveling within the tow vehicle.
Payload Capacity is the maximum amount of weight you can safely add to a tow vehicle’s cargo area in addition to its curb weight.
Generally, the load capacity of your trailer is calculated by taking the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and subtracting the weight of the trailer (unloaded).
PJ Trailers has developed an interactive towing calculator that allows you to input the various weight ratings for both your tow vehicle and trailer to provide safe guidance for hauling.
The Curb Weight is the total weight of your empty tow vehicle/trailer as it sits resting on the “curb”. This generally provided by the manufacture and does not include any additional loaded items, such as passengers, cargo, fuel, or accessories.
The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is the maximum allowable weight for the combination of your tow vehicle and trailer.
